Frequently Asked Questions & Other Bits and Pieces
Q: Why shouldn't I just print business cards off my laser or ink-jet printer? Isn't that a lot cheaper?
A: The main advantage of real printing over laser technology is that letters and numbers won't flake or rub off your business cards after you've handed them out. This applies to all printed pieces; i.e., brochures, flyers, menus, envelopes, letterheads, etc. For example, create a flyer on your computer, print it out, and then mail it to yourself. That is what your customer will see.
Q: Do you do graphic design work?
A: Yes. We can customize nearly anything for you - from simple postcards, to intricate newsletters or business forms. Even logos! We have many years of experience. Both Macs and PCs are used, and we incorporate many different software programs, such as Adobe Creative Suite, PageMaker, Illustrator, CorelDraw, Quark, and more.
FYI-1: If you do your own artwork, please call for information on your project's file, as some software programs are not conducive to camera-ready artwork used in lithography. However, we can usually solve any glitches and make your artwork shine!
FYI-2: It is possible that you are not aware of a small common problem when customers give a printing company their disk or CD. The print-out may not be exactly the same, such as font substitution, from one printer to a different printer. This is why it is important to see the final out-put, before your job goes to press. We can correct most problems, but this is something you should be aware of.
Q: Is your graphic designing expensive?
A: We charge $40 an hour (but we're really fast!). We are happy to give you a firm quote on any project.
Q: What bindery services can you provide in-house?
A: We have a 50+ year old (!!) Heidelberg letterpress that does numbering, perforating, die-cutting, foiling, and embossing. And it's fun and fascinating to watch her perform. We also laminate, GBC bind, pad, cut, and collate.
Q: Do you provide pick-up and delivery service?
A: Yes, and please call for our areas of service.
Q: Can you do "Emergency Printing" ~ as in extremely tight deadlines?
A: Yes, yes, and yes. One example was 85,000 two-sided, heavy solid, full-bleed giant post cards out-the-door in ONE DAY, and we had received the artwork only the night before! Our staff is extremely experienced and we have not only a "Can-Do Attitude" but a "Must-Do Attitude". Our busy customers deserve it. However, if we are booked solid on all of our equipment, we will tell you that up front.
Q: Do you guarantee your work?
A: Yes, after our customers have their final approval on "proofs" prior to printing. Our real job is to make your job look not only great, but the way you want it to look. That's a huge priority with us.
Q: What do you need from me to tell you about my job?
A: An interesting article by Amanda Webber in Dynamic Graphics listed these important tips:
- Quote Deadline: When do you need to have it?
- Quantity: How many pieces will you need?
- How will you use the finished piece?
- Paper Stock: How do you want your job to look? (i.e. Smooth finish, linen, or laid finish; text or cover weight.)
- Coating: Do you need varnish, lamination, etc.?
- Folding: is the job a plain postcard or self mailer?
- Color Format: (i.e. One color, spot colors, or 4 color process.)
- Final size
- Printing deadline: When do you need the job delivered and where?
- Do you need a proof? What kind? (i.e. laser, blue line)
Q: Do you do web-design work?
A: No, but we recommend Dale Alling of Design Render at (509)999-9363, who designed our website. It took Dale about four weeks after we struggled and gave up. His quote to us was extremely reasonable. Okay, ridiculously reasonable. We highly recommend him and encourage you to visit his website. We also recommend Unobe Syndicate at (509)362-4928 if you need a quick fix for a computer glitch. Marcus has saved us more than a few times and answers questions in a way that we can understand!
